...and AOL has perpetual rights to it. Wow. What slime they are... I'm never using it again now.

Go with Jabber -- it's fully documented, so there's not a problem to switch between different chat clients. Apple's OSX 10.4 "Tiger" will have Jabber support included with iChat, and you can use Gaim for Linux or Windows (version 1.1.4 has a bug that affects its ability to register new Jabber accounts, though).
